What Is the VSOL V1601E02?

Layer 3 2 PON Ports EPON OLT with 2 SFP/SFP+ and 4 GE uplink ports - VSOL

The VSOL V1601E02 is an EPON Optical Line Terminal installed at the ISP or network-operator side of a Passive Optical Network.

Its role is to manage multiple subscriber ONUs through a passive fibre distribution system consisting of feeder fibre, ODFs, PLC splitters, fibre closures, FAT boxes and drop cables.

Network ComponentFunction

PON SFPProvides EPON optical interface
ODFTerminates feeder fibres
PLC SplitterSplits one PON signal
Fibre CableCarries optical signal
FAT BoxDistributes subscriber connections
FTTH Drop CableConnects subscriber premises

What Does EPON Mean?

EPON stands for Ethernet Passive Optical Network and is based on IEEE 802.3ah.

TermMeaning

The V1601E02 complies with the IEEE 802.3ah EPON standard

Two EPON PON Ports

The V1601E02 provides two EPON interfaces.

PON PortMaximum Split Ratio
PON 11:64
PON 21:64
Total Theoretical Endpoint Positions128

VSOL specifies a maximum 1:64 split ratio per PON interface

The actual number of subscribers should be determined using:

  • Optical power budget

  • Fibre length

  • Splitter loss

  • Connector and splice loss

  • Package speeds

  • Expected traffic

  • Uplink capacity

  • OLT ONU-registration limits

  • Required performance margin

1:64 Split Ratio

Each PON port can support a splitter tree reaching up to 64 optical endpoints.

SplitterOutputs
1x22
1x44
1x88
1x1616
1x3232
1x6464

For many ISP deployments, a 1:16 or 1:32 split may provide a better balance between optical margin, subscriber capacity and available bandwidth than automatically designing to the maximum 1:64.

Maximum Subscriber Capacity

Using the maximum split ratio:

ConfigurationTheoretical ONU Positions
1 PON × 1:3232
2 PON × 1:3264
1 PON × 1:6464
2 PON × 1:64128

This makes the VSOL V1601E02 particularly attractive to startup and neighbourhood ISPs that need more capacity than a single-port OLT but do not yet require a 4-, 8- or 16-port system.

Supported EPON PON Modules

The OLT accepts multiple optical module classes.

PON ModuleSupport
PX20Yes
PX20+Yes
PX20++Yes
PX20+++Yes
PX20++++Yes

VSOL officially lists all five classes as supported on the V1601E02 platform.

Higher optical-budget modules can provide additional margin where the network has longer fibre routes, more splitting or higher passive losses.

Uplink Interfaces

One of the strongest features of the VSOL V1601E02 is its uplink configuration.

InterfaceQuantity
Gigabit RJ454
SFP / SFP+2
Total Uplink Interfaces6

The two SFP/SFP+ interfaces can be used with compatible fibre modules, while the RJ45 ports provide copper Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.

Why SFP+ Uplinks Matter

A growing ISP can easily reach the point where a single Gigabit uplink becomes a bottleneck.

With compatible SFP+ modules, the V1601E02 platform can provide higher-speed optical uplinks to:

  • MikroTik routers

  • Core switches

  • Aggregation switches

  • Data-centre switches

  • ISP upstream infrastructure

This gives the operator more headroom as subscriber traffic increases.

The VSOL V1601E02 2-Port EPON OLT provides a practical balance between low entry cost and subscriber scalability. Its two PON interfaces can each support optical splitting up to 1:64, allowing a theoretical total of 128 ONU positions while still giving the operator two physically separate PON distribution trees.

Its uplink configuration is particularly useful for growing ISPs. Four Gigabit RJ45 interfaces can connect to conventional Ethernet infrastructure, while two SFP/SFP+ ports allow fibre or higher-speed uplinks toward core routers and switches. The platform also provides 128 Gbps backplane bandwidth on the V1601E02-DP, giving the OLT sufficient internal switching capacity for its access and uplink interfaces.

For complete deployment, the OLT should be paired with suitable EPON optics, PLC splitters, fibre cables and subscriber ONUs. Fiber Optics Kenya can supply the VSOL V1601E02 together with PX20++ or compatible PON modules, EPON/XPON ONUs, ODFs, FAT boxes, PLC splitters, fibre closures, patch cords, ADSS fibre cables, FTTH drop cables, fusion-splicing equipment and fibre testing tools.
