VSOL 8-Port GPON OLT in Kenya

Image

The VSOL 8-Port GPON OLT, commonly represented by the V1600G1-B, is a professional Layer 3 Optical Line Terminal designed for medium and large FTTH, FTTB, FTTO, ISP, enterprise and broadband access networks. It provides eight independent GPON interfaces together with Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit uplinks, allowing an operator to manage a large subscriber base from a compact 1U platform.

Each GPON port supports a maximum 1:128 optical split ratio. The platform provides the standard GPON line rates of approximately 2.488 Gbps downstream and 1.244 Gbps upstream, supports transmission distances of up to 20 km, and works with GPON optical-module classes from B+ through C+++

The V1600G1-B also combines its GPON access functionality with Layer 3 routing, VLANs, QinQ, T-CONT DBA, multicast, DHCP services, ACLs, IPv6, RADIUS, TACACS+, ONT auto-discovery and multiple management methods. VSOL has since introduced the newer V1600G1-R as the cost-effective successor to the V1600G1-B, adding a 240 Gbps backplane and more flexible 10G-capable uplinks, but the V1600G1-B remains an important and widely deployed 8-port VSOL GPON platform.

1:8864
1:1616128
1:3232256
1:6464512
1:1281281,024

The 1,024 figure is a theoretical optical endpoint count, calculated from eight ports at the maximum supported 1:128 split. Actual subscriber design should also consider optical loss, ONT registration limits, aggregate traffic, package speeds and uplink capacity. The official V1600G1-B specification confirms a maximum split ratio of 1:128 per GPON port.

Although 1:128 is supported, 1:16, 1:32 or 1:64 may be preferable where the operator wants better optical margin and fewer subscribers sharing a PON.

GPON Port Speed

Each GPON interface provides the standard GPON line rate:

DirectionLine Rate
Downstream2.488 Gbps
Upstream1.244 Gbps

These rates are specified in VSOL's V1600G1-B datasheet.

The bandwidth on each PON is shared among the connected ONTs.

20 km Transmission Distance

VSOL specifies a maximum GPON transmission distance of 20 km

Actual usable distance depends on:

  • Fibre attenuation

  • PLC splitter insertion loss

  • Fusion-splice loss

  • Connector and adapter losses

  • Optical-module class

  • ONT receiver sensitivity

  • Engineering safety margin

A proper optical power-budget calculation should be completed before deployment.

GPON Operating Wavelengths

VSOL lists 1490 nm TX and 1310 nm RX for the V1600G1-B.

Supported GPON Optical Modules

The V1600G1-B supports multiple optical-budget classes.

GPON Module ClassSupported

C+++Yes

This wide optical-module support allows operators to select optics according to splitter loss and network reach.

GPON C++ and C+++ Modules

VSOL specifically lists C++ and C+++ GPON SFP modules among the available accessories for the V1600G1-B.

Optical ClassTypical Positioning
B+Standard GPON deployment
C+Higher optical budget
C++Extended-loss network

This configuration is confirmed by VSOL's official product page and datasheet.

10G SFP+ Uplinks

VSOL 8‑Port EPON OLT – V1600D8

The two 10GE SFP+ interfaces are important for an OLT that may serve several hundred active subscribers.

They can connect the OLT to:

  • MikroTik core routers

  • Aggregation switches

  • Data-centre switches

  • ISP backbone routers

  • Redundant fibre uplinks

A 10G uplink provides considerably more traffic headroom than a single Gigabit uplink.

104 Gbps Backplane Bandwidth

Image
Performance MetricSpecification
Backplane Bandwidth104 Gbps
Forwarding RateApprox. 65–68 Mpps
MAC Address Table32K

VSOL's current V1600G1-B product table lists 104 Gbps backplane capacity, while official datasheet revisions show forwarding values around 65.472 to 68.448 Mpps.

Layer 3 Routing

The VSOL V1600G1-B combines Layer 2 OLT functions with Layer 3 routing.

Supported routing functions include:

  • Static routing

  • RIP v1/v2

  • RIPng

  • OSPF v2/v3

T-CONT Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation

GPON uses T-CONT DBA to dynamically assign upstream bandwidth among subscriber ONTs.

The V1600G1-B supports both T-CONT DBA and GEM port traffic management

This helps operators provide different subscriber packages while efficiently sharing the PON upstream capacity.

QoS Support

The V1600G1-B supports QoS classification based on:

  • Port

  • VLAN ID

  • MAC address

This is useful for giving higher priority to business traffic, voice, IPTV or network-management services.

ONT Auto Discovery and Remote Management

The OLT supports:

  • ONT auto-discovery

https://youtu.be/YD5CQLOJWNQ

The VSOL V1600G1-B 8-Port GPON OLT offers substantially more access capacity than a 2- or 4-port GPON platform. Eight PON interfaces allow the operator to separate subscribers into multiple fibre distribution zones, while support for 1:128 splitting provides a very high theoretical endpoint density. The OLT also supplies 2.488 Gbps downstream and 1.244 Gbps upstream per GPON interface.

Its uplink architecture is equally important for a growing ISP. Four Gigabit RJ45 ports, two Gigabit SFP slots and two 10GE SFP+ interfaces provide several options for connecting the OLT to MikroTik routers, aggregation switches and backbone fibre infrastructure. Layer 3 routing, VLANs, QinQ, DBA and IPv6 further increase the flexibility of the platform. (Vsolcn)

For complete GPON deployment, Fiber Optics Kenya can supply the VSOL 8-Port GPON OLT together with GPON optical modules, GPON/XPON ONTs, PLC splitters, ODFs, FAT boxes, fibre closures, ADSS and armoured fibre cables, patch cords, fusion-splicing equipment and PON testing tools.

The VSOL 8-Port GPON OLT provides a scalable platform for medium and growing fibre operators that require significantly more capacity than 2- or 4-port systems. The established V1600G1-B combines eight GPON ports, 1:128 splitting, 2.488 Gbps downstream, 1.244 Gbps upstream, two 10GE SFP+ uplinks, Layer 3 routing, 4096 VLANs, QinQ, T-CONT DBA, multicast, IPv6 and centralized ONT management in a compact 1U chassis.

For new deployments, the newer V1600G1-R is also worth considering because it retains eight GPON ports while increasing the backplane to 240 Gbps and providing four flexible SFP/SFP+ optical uplinks.
