What Is the HIOSO HA7304 EPON OLT?

HIOSO HA7304 OLT EPON 4 Port + 4 SFP PX20++ - Jebotel

The HA7304 is the central active device used on the service-provider side of an EPON network.

It communicates with multiple subscriber ONUs or ONTs over a passive fibre distribution system.

Network ComponentFunction
OLTControls and manages the EPON network
PON SFPProvides optical connection from OLT
Feeder FibreCarries EPON optical signal
PLC SplitterSplits one PON connection
Distribution FibreCarries signal toward subscribers
ONU / ONTTerminates fibre at customer premises
Router / Wi-FiProvides local subscriber connectivity

The HA7304 can work with multiple ONU models and is designed to establish passive optical networks for broadband, IPTV and voice services.

What Does EPON Mean?

EPON stands for Ethernet Passive Optical Network.

TermMeaning
EPONEthernet Passive Optical Network
OLTOptical Line Terminal
ONUOptical Network Unit
ONTOptical Network Terminal
PONPassive Optical Network
ODNOptical Distribution Network
FTTHFibre to the Home
FTTBFibre to the Building
FTTOFibre to the Office

EPON uses Ethernet technology over passive optical fibre infrastructure, allowing multiple subscribers to share one OLT PON interface through optical splitters.

4 EPON PON Ports

The HA7304 includes four SFP-based PON interfaces.

PON PortMaximum Theoretical ONU Count at 1:64
PON 164
PON 264
PON 364
PON 464
Maximum Total256 ONUs

HiOSO specifies support for up to 64 ONUs per PON port and up to 256 ONUs across the complete HA7304 chassis.

Actual subscriber design should also account for optical power budget, splitter losses, fibre distance and service bandwidth requirements.

PX20++ PON SFP Modules

EPON OLT - Shenzhen Hio Link Technology Co., Ltd.

This package includes four PX20++ EPON optical modules, one for each PON interface.

Optical Power Specifications

Optical ParameterTypical Specification
OLT Transmit Power+2.5 to +7 dBm
Receiving SensitivityAround -30 dBm
Maximum DistanceUp to 20 km
Maximum Split Ratio1:64

These values come from HA7304 technical specifications.

1:64 Split Ratio

Each PON interface can theoretically support a 1:64 optical split.

A single OLT PON port can therefore distribute service through:

Splitter DesignSubscriber Outputs
1x22
1x44
1x88
1x1616
1x3232
1x6464

A 1:64 split does not automatically mean 64 subscribers should always be connected. Optical loss, network distance, connector loss, splice loss and subscriber traffic must all be considered.

20 km Transmission Distance

HiOSO lists a maximum reach of approximately 20 km when operating under a 1:32 split ratio

Network FactorEffect on Reach
Fibre LengthAdds attenuation
PLC SplitterIntroduces optical loss
Fusion SplicesAdd small losses
ConnectorsAdd insertion loss
Patch CordsAdd optical loss
Fibre QualityInfluences performance
Dirty ConnectorsCan significantly increase loss

An optical power-budget calculation should be completed before deploying a long or heavily split network.

Uplink Interfaces

The HA7304 provides multiple Gigabit Ethernet uplinks.

Uplink TypeQuantity
Gigabit SFP Uplink2
Gigabit RJ45 Uplink2

These uplinks connect the OLT to a core router, aggregation switch, MikroTik router or upstream ISP network.
